Postcard from Montenegro

There’s nothing quite like discovering paradise right outside your back door. Sometimes all it takes is a chance to visit an unexpected destination to open your eyes to a whole new world. Recently, we’ve had the sublime privilege of visiting Montenegro a small nation tucked away in the corner of the Mediterranean. Our expectations? Well to be honest we didn’t really have any. As with most people, Montenegro wasn’t really on our radar. But this coastal gem has certainly crept into our hearts. But why? Here’s our list of why Montenegro should 100% be your next remote work destination.

It’s absolutely beautiful

If there’s one thing that will without a doubt take your breath away almost instantly in Montenegro, it’s the scenery. Sandwiched between Albania and Croatia, this tiny nation is pretty easy to miss on the map. But if you’re looking for a place with pristine pebble beaches, cliffs that fall into the sea, and old towns that make you feel like you’re in a love story, then look no further. In the summertime, the coastline can tend to get packed out with Tourists from surrounding countries like Serbia, but a short drive towards the mountains can lead you to some breathtaking views and crystal clear waterfalls, with hardly a soul in sight. Fruit trees line every hillside and it’s just so easy to stop and pick a few figs for breakfast en route to your destination.

Luxury or budget

Whether you are looking to stay for a week in pure luxury or stick around for a while living on the fringe the small nation of Montenegro has just about everything you could need. Towns like Kotor, Budva and Perast have some breathtaking stays and then there are places like the tiny islet of Sveti Stefan with Villas overlooking what you might think to be a dream. Digital nomads can have a fairly good time here too as there are endless options for long-term stays all over the country. A top tip here would be to try to locate yourself in the northern part of the country. There’s more happening there and you are more likely to find better restaurants and hotels

This place is ancient

Montenegro has a history dating back to the Ottoman Empire and we can tell you that there are reminders everywhere you go. The old towns of Ulcin and Kotor will make you feel like you’re living in a Game of Thrones episode. Montenegro’s rich culture has also influenced one of the most interesting local cuisines in the world. A true melting pot of Mediterranean, Persian, and European cultures has led to flavourful and rich meals.

A hop, skip, and a jump

Quite literally a skip from mainland Europe, you’ve barely had time to get comfortable in your seat before the plane starts its descent. Flight into the capital Podgorica go a few times a day and if you’re looking for something more convenient Tivat Airport is a short trip to some of the top locations in the northern part of the country. The proximity to most of Europe makes Montenegro a great destination for digital nomads as trips are short and it’s easy to go back and forth when you need to.

Convenience is key

For a digital nomad, this place is just so easy. Good wifi and accommodation on the coastline line are found almost anywhere. The local food will keep you salivating for the entirety of your trip. You can situate yourself in the hustle and bustle of the quiet countryside. Getting around is easy and car hire is relatively cheap. The best part about it? Well, so far it seems like only you and us know about it!
